For hundreds of years, the Fiddletree grew on a forested hillside on Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia. Through text, photographs and music, this book and CD set tells the story of that tree -- and of it’s transformation into the ensemble of musical instruments that gave it a voice and a new life. At the same time, it is also a personal story that provides an intimate look at what happens at a violin maker’s workbench -- and offers some personal reflections on the interplay of science, tradition, and art in the ways of thought that guide the search for the voice hidden within the wood.
The enclosed CD offers a 70 minute recording of original music composed by Otis Tomas for the Fiddletree ensemble, and played by Otis Tomas and Sarah McFadyen - violins: Mairi Campbell - viola; Abby Newton - 'cello; Laoise Kelly - harp; Paul MacDonald - guitar; and Claudine Langille - mandolin.
